Jeera Aloo Recipe

Vrat ke aloo or Jeera aloo are stir fry potatoes with a seasoning of cumin seeds. They make an ideal accompaniment for food eaten on days of 'fast' or 'vrat'. They are usually prepared with Samak ke chawal and Peanut Kadhi.

Ingredients

  • Potatoes - 2 big, boiled and peeled
  • Oil - 3 tsp
  • Green chilies - 1 or 2 or by taste, cut into small pieces
  • Coarsely roasted peanut powder* - 1 tbsp
  • Salt - To taste
  • Sugar (optional) - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Boil and peel the potatoes and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Cut them into cubes of size according to your liking.
  3. Heat 3 tsp oil in a pan and add 1 tsp cumin seeds. Wait till they sizzle.
  4. Add green chilies and stir fry a little.
  5. Add the potato cubes and mix.
  6. Now add the roasted peanut powder*, and toss gently to mix everything.. Reduce the heat to low.
  7. Add salt to taste and 1 tsp sugar.
  8. Mix well and aaloow to cook for two minutes more and then turn off the gas.
  9. Serve this delicious Jeera Aloo with Vrat ke Chawal and Peanut Kadhi.

*Roast peanuts in a pan on a medium flame, till some black spots start appearing on the outside. Let cool and then crush a little with hands to separate peels. Blow away the peels and grind the peanuts coarsely.
