Tomato Chutney II Recipe

By Uma Abhyankar May 26, 2015

This tomato chutney is a delicious and finger licking accompaniment to all the South Indian foods like dosa, uttapam, appam, idli, or vada. You may also like to try it with different parathas or sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • Tomatoes - 2
  • Black lentils (Urad Dal) - 1 tsp
  • Split chick peas (Chana Dal) - 1 tsp
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 10-12
  • Dried red chili - 1
  • Salt - To taste
  • Jaggery (gud) - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 & 1/2 tsp

Instructions

  1. Cut 2 tomatoes into big pieces.
  2. Heat 1 & 1/2 tsp oil in a pan.
  3. Add 1 tsp black lentils (urad dal), 1 tsp split chick peas (chana dal), and 1 tsp sesame seeds. Stir fry till all the above turn pinkish brown in color.
  4. Add 1 red chili and 10-12 curry leaves. Mix well and add the chopped tomatoes.
  5. Mix again and stir fry for 2 minutes till the tomatoes become soft and start dissolving.
  6. Add salt to taste and 1 tsp jaggery or gud.
  7. Turn off the heat and let cool a bit. Finely grind in a grinder.
  8. Serve with any dosa, idli, vada, or uttapam.
