Samak Ki Khichdi (Vrat Ki Khichdi)
Samak ke chawal or barnyard millet is often eaten during fast or vrat. Earlier I shared the recipe to make plain "Samak ke Chawal' that can be eaten with 'Peanut Kadhi'. Now here I have a simple vrat ki khichdi, Samak ki Khichdi, made with samak ke chawal that can serve as a quick single pot meal during 'vrat'.
There are two versions of this khichdi - one that is runny and soft like 'Moong Dal Khichdi', while the other is dry just like 'Sabudana Khichadi'. I have shared both the versions here - in written form as well as in the video. Hope you enjoy them both.:)
Ingredients
- 1 cup = 250 ml
- Oil or Clarified butter (Ghee) - 3 tsp
- Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
- Green Chilies - 2, cut into small pieces
- Potato - 1, peeled and cut into small cubes
- Samak Ke Chawal (Barnyard millet grains) - 1/2 cup
- Red chili powder - By taste
- Salt - By taste
- Sugar - 1/2 tsp
- Roasted peanut powder - 1/4 cup
Instructions
Samak Ki Khichdi ( Dry version) -
- Dry roast the barnyard millet (Samak ke Chawal) on a medium heat till they become slightly brownish.
- Add 3/4th cup of boiling hot water to it. Mix and cover to keep aside for one hour. Turn the millet around a couple of times in between.
- After an hour, the millet grains would have absorbed most of the water and puffed up.
- Heat oil or 'ghee' in a pan and add the cumin seeds.
- Add the green chilies and potato cubes.
- Stir fry the potatoes till they are slightly golden in color. Then cover to cook until they are soft and cooked from inside.
- Add the millet grains from step 3 and mix everything.
- Add salt, sugar, red chili powder and the peanut powder and mix again.
- Sprinkle about 3-4 scoops of water, cover and allow to cook for 10 -15 minutes on a very low flame. Make sure you turn them around after every 2-3 minutes.
- Cook till all the grains of the millet are soft and completely cooked. (If required you may sprinkle more water a couple of times, to make the grains soft.)
- Once the grains are completely cooked and are soft, turn off the gas.
- Serve this dry version of 'Samak Ki Khichdi' with some Sweet Lemon Pickle.
'Samak Ki Khichdi' (Soft version) -
- Wash the barnyard millet (Samak ke Chawal) in water and drain away all the water.
- Heat oil or 'ghee' in a pot and add cumin seeds.
- Also add green chilies and potato cubes.
- Stir fry the potatoes till the edges become slightly golden.
- Add the washed millet grains and stir fry for 2 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of water.
- Add salt and red chili powder.
- Turn the flame to low medium and allow the water to boil. Keep turning in between.
- Continue to boil till the water is almost level with the grains.
- Add peanut powder and mix.
- Cover to cook on low flame for another minute before turning off the gas.
- Serve this hot 'Samak ki Khichdi' with Sweet Lemon Pickle'.
